Can an Org Use Your Book? Part 4 What Kinds of Books Can Work for Organizations? Book Marketing Tip, April, 2009

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Just to peek at the tip of the iceberg; many others are possible

  • Local history (great for a bank, Chamber of Commerce, etc.)
  • How-to (very helpful to manufacturers and distributors/dealers who need to train people in their product)
  • Health and wellness (drug companies, hospitals, practitioners)
  • Business theory (Southwest Airlines bought 1000 copies of my sixth book, Principled Profit: Marketing That Puts People First–what I heard back was that the company president wanted to give them to people he wanted to impress)
  • Travel/destination (Chambers of Commerce, attractions, airlines, travel agencies…)
  • Coffee-table art book (whatever company, industry, or institution is being profiled)
  • Cookbook/food book (food manufacturers, restaurants, gourmet or specialty grocery stores; Dian Pfeifer, author of “Gone With the Grits,” sold 15,000 to cereal maker Quaker, which manufactures grits)
  • Fiction (tie-ins with locations, genres, equipment, cars…)
  • Parenting and child-rearing (schools, play equipment and toy manufacturers, early-childhood education industry, counselors, even law enforcement–in my seventh book, Grassroots Marketing for Authors and Publishers, I cite the author of a book on bullying that had been picked up by several police departments)

Keep in mind that you can not only sell entire books (especially if you can offer a custom cover so the sponsor’s name is on the front), but also pieces (as booklets, special reports, audios, etc.).

This series will continue with part 5, how to approach the organizations. And as a bonus, part 6 will apply what you’ve learned to bulk purchases in the corporate sector.

  • Need a product to sell? If you’ve been around the Internet marketing world for any time at all, you’ve come across 1ShoppingCart.com and all its rebranded variations. Many of the gurus use this software to run their downloadable e-products, their autoresponders, newsletters, etc. The programmer who created 1shoppingcart is George Tran, and George has just released “The Social Marketing Manifesto,” a very well-written, well-thought-out, and well-researched 154-page e-book that helps you quickly understand the culture of social media networks, has great advice for how to monetize, and reviews numerous tools to set up your own social media network and/or participate more effectively on existing platforms. It retails for $29.97, but I’m offering it for just $18.95. AND you get full resale rights! I have to tell you, I’ve not been impressed with the quality of a lot of the private-label-resale-rights info products out there, but this one is a gem. And one of the things I really like about it is that it’s aimed at (and useful to) both business and nonprofits, and there’s a lot of really good stuff specifically for nonprofits from someone who deeply understands that business model.

Enjoy the First Harvest: Frugal Fun Tip, April 2009

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Shel Horowitz’s Frugal Fun Tip, April 2009

Around the parts of the Northern Hemisphere that don’t have a winter growing season, the earth is waking up and beginning to share its bounty. Each region has its own special crops to look forward to in April and May, and wherever you live, there’s bound to be some tasty stuff available for foraging or purchased from local farmstands and gourmet shops.

As an example, these are some of the treats we have in my own area of Western Massachusetts

  • Maple syrup, our first crop of the year with production in March–and lots of the sugar houses do pancake breakfasts during sugaring season.
  • Asparagus: my own town of Hadley, MA was once the asparagus capital of the world, and the succulent, fresh stalks we get here are a completely superior experience over anything shipped across the country. It’s not even that hard to grow your own, though you have to plan a few years ahead.
  • Fiddlehead ferns. I’m personally not crazy about them, but in a few weeks, we’ll start to see avid fiddlehead collectors every time we go hiking. If you like okra, you might like these too.
  • Dandelion Greens: when they’re young and tender, the add a pleasant, slightly bitter taste to a salad.
  • Sugar Snap Peas: Really fresh ones are sweet and crunchy and don’t even need to be cooked!
  • Rhubard can be used for far more than pie. It adds a nice tart punch to a stirfry or salad, for instance.

And what’s in season where you live?

–> How to Cold-Pitch a Reporter: Frugal Marketing Tip, April ‘09
If you ask journalists their biggest peeves with PR people, and especially with people trying to do their own PR, the most frequent response you’re like to get is “they waste my time with off-topic pitches. If you think the rest of us have crowded inboxes…triple it for journalists. Now Available!  BE THE MEDIA features more than 500 pages with over fifty media experts, educators, and activists (such as David Mathison and Alex Mandossian) who teach you the latest and greatest ways to market and sell your books, music, films, information products and services. The book includes more than 500 pages of material to help you control your rights, have a direct relationship with your audience, and earn more royalties. http://www.1shoppingcart.com/app/?af=955449

Need a product to sell?

Some of the opportunities mentioned may pay commissions. If you’d like to know if a particular program is commissionable, you’re welcome to ask us.

Note: As is the case for most professional reviewers, many of the books I review on this site have been provided by the publisher or author, at no cost to me. I've also reviewed books that I bought, because they were worthy of your time. And I've also received dozens of review copies at no charge that do not get reviewed, either because they are not worthy or because they don't meet the subject criteria for this column, or simply because I haven't gotten around to them yet, since I only review one book per month. I have far more books in my office than I will ever read, and the receipt of a free book does not affect my review.
